Couples' KAP Replay: Module 2, Relational Assessment

CE Hours 3

About this course

Overview

The Couple's KAP Replay is an on-demand continuing education series featuring recordings from Enamory Institute's live Couples' Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) Therapist Training event held in July 2026. Through didactic instruction, clinical case examples, experiential exercises, and demonstrations, participants are provided with a structured and evidence-based approach to assessment, preparation, dosing, and integration phases of KAP with couples.

Grounded in evidence-based principles and strategies from the established couple therapy literature (Jackson et al., 2026) and informed by current research and best practices in psychedelic-assisted care, this training explores how ketamine can be thoughtfully integrated into couple therapy. Across the series, participants will learn to uncover recurring relational patterns, identify and provide feedback on relevant ketamine treatment targets, prepare couples for ketamine experiences, differentiate approaches to dyadic dosing, and facilitate targeted integration strategies to support couple therapy goals and ongoing relational change.

This training is designed to be applicable across theoretical orientations, emphasizing evidence-based couple therapy principles and structured clinical decision-making that participants can incorporate within their existing approach to working with couples. Whether taken individually or as part of the complete Couples’ KAP replay series, each module (Relational Assessment, Feedback & Preparation, Dyadic Dosing, and Dyadic Integration) provides focused instruction and practical strategies that clinicians can immediately apply in their work with couples.

The following module provides focused instruction on one core component of KAP with couples: Relational Assessment, introducing a structured assessment and case conceptualization framework that informs subsequent KAP treatment decisions.

Module 2: Relational Assessment

Module 2, Relational Assessment, introduces assessment methods for facilitating conjoint and individual sessions in order to clarify presenting concerns and goals while also uncovering important aspects of couple interactional patterns. Therapists will learn how to map an interactional pattern between partners using thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviors to understand underlying mechanisms influencing current relational distress. We then explore how the relational pattern can be used to identify relevant therapeutic targets that ketamine may support.

Learning Objectives

  • Conduct conjoint and individual assessments that elicit information to understand relational pattern & screen for safety/risk factors that would be a contraindication for KAP.
  • Map a couple’s recurring interaction pattern using a structured and evidence-based model of assessment.
  • Identify ketamine-relevant therapy targets that can inform dosing decisions and integration strategies.

Learning Levels

  • Intermediate

Target Audience

This training is suitable for clinicians and other mental health professionals with foundational knowledge of both ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) and couples therapy.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Chandra Estelle Khalifian, PhD

Chandra Estelle Khalifian, Ph.D., is research faculty at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the co-founder of Enamory– a clinic, training institute, and research center focused on psychedelic-assisted couple therapy. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship (Advanced Fellowship for Women’s Health) at the VA San Diego / UCSD consortium. She completed a VA Career Development Award under mentorship of Dr. Leslie Morland studying the Treatment for Relationships & Saftey (TR&ST)-- a couple-based suicide intervention that she developed during her postdoctoral fellowship. She has been a co-investigator on multiple funded research trials including a MDMA-assisted couple therapy for PTSD trial. Her research is focused on developing novel couple interventions for relationship distress, PTSD, and suicide. She is particularly interested in enhancing evidence-based interventions with psychedelics. Within Enamory, Dr. Khalifian sees couples and individuals, supervises associate therapists, conducts research, and co-developed, with her colleagues, Dr. Kayla Knopp and Dr. Skylar Kelsven, the world’s first ketamine-assisted couple therapy training and certification program.

  • Kayla Knopp, PhD

Kayla C. Knopp, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and clinical researcher. Her research and clinical interests center around understanding the reciprocal associations between intimate relationship functioning and mental health, supporting diverse relationship types and structures, and using novel and creative methods to improve both access to and impacts of interventions for couples. Her current projects include technology-supported interventions for couples and psychedelic-assisted couple therapies. Dr. Knopp earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver and completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship (Advanced Fellowship for Women’s Health) at the VA San Diego / University of California San Diego consortium. She was awarded a VA Career Development Award under mentorship of Dr. Leslie Morland studying the OurRelationship program for veterans and their partners. Dr. Knopp co-founded Enamory, a clinic, training institute, and research foundation specializing in ketamine-assisted couple therapy. In addition to seeing a small caseload of couples and individuals, Dr. Knopp supervises associate therapists, provides training and consultation to therapists, and conducts clinic-based research. Together with Enamory’s co-founder Dr. Chandra Khalifian and training director Dr. Skylar Kelsven, Dr. Knopp is the co-developer of the world’s first ketamine-assisted couple therapy training and certification program.
